The New England Stress Management center was founded in 1984 by Dr. Al Tatarunis. The basic premise behind the program is, "NOBODY DRIVES YOU CRAZY, YOU DO!!!" If the person does not accept that premise, then it is not possible to teach them how to cope with the stress in their lives. Because, if they believe that their environment and every one in it is the creator of their stress, then changing their environment and all the people is an impossibility. However, if they accept the premise then the only one that has to change is them and that is possible. That's what's so great about being a human being you can change. Change is not easy. But it is possible.
The three greatest stressors in life are circumstances, people and events. Of these three you can only do something about some of your circumstances. So there is a rule for circumstances, "IF YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT DO IT, IF YOU CANT, SCREW IT!" Think about how much time we've all spent trying to do something about something we can't do anything about. That process is quite stress provoking. The greatest power we have when we are facing the three great stressors is how we REACT. Ultimately, how we react will determine how much stress will be created. There is an old saying, "If you continue to do what you're doing now, you're going to get what you're getting now." Therefore, if you don't like what you're getting then you must change. Change is not easy. BUT IT'S POSSIBLE.
A 21st century approach to stress management includes:
Relaxation
There is nothing more frustrating than when you are told to relax when you’re having a stressful episode. Because you have been told to relax does not immediately bring about the relaxation response. Relaxing is a learned skill and like all skills must be practiced. Unfortunately, in today’s world there is a misconception as to what is relaxing. Such activities as reading a book, working in the garden, watching television, playing tennis, and similar activities are not really relaxing because they fail to break the chain of stress that registers in the brain and creates psychological and physiological problems. To break this chain of stress one has to get into an altered state of consciousness.
The quickest path to the altered state is hypnosis and is an integral part of the 21st century Stress Management program. After the first visit you will have acquired the skill of self-hypnosis and will receive a hypnotic relaxation CD to maintain your relaxed state.
Cognitive Restructuring/Behavior Modification
If you continue to do what you’re doing now you’re going to continue to get what you’re getting now. If you don’t like what you’re getting then change – fix it! Years ago when I was faced with this problem I discovered I could not fix the problem until I discovered what was broken. The 21st Century Stress Management Program will help you to focus on those areas in your life that need to be “fixed”.
Emotional Release Technique
The Emotional Release Technique is used to help detach from such emotion as anger, frustration, fear, etc. Once we become attached to any of these emotions they contribute to creating a great deal of stress. When this occurs we have a choice of hanging on to them or letting them go. EMT is the process of how to release these emotions whether they come from the past or that may arise moment to moment. Our thoughts create these emotions that create the stress we experience. Therefore, it’s important to have a technique that helps to detach when these emotions arise.
Law of Attraction
We all live in our individual “vibrational bubble” and the energy we send out from the bubble is exactly what we get back. If you are sending out deliberate or no-deliberate positive energy that’s what you will get back. However, if you are sending out deliberate or non-deliberate negative energy that’s what you will receive back. If you send out to the universe what you don’t want you will receive back what you don’t want. When using the words don’t, not, and no you will attract the opposite of what you want. For example if I say, “Don’t think of a red balloon.” Or “Don’t think of Judy Garland’s red shoes in the Wizard of Oz.” notice how they immediately appear in your mind. The Law of attraction is used in the 21st Century Stress Management Program to help you to stop attracting what you don’t want instead of what you do want.
